Soof Embroidery

Soof is a precise form of embroidery practised by a cluster of women artisans in Kutch. One of the most fascinating details of soof is that it is stitched directly from the reverse side of the fabric, without any tracing or sketching. Artisans create the entire design by mental visualisation, counting each thread to make symmetrical motifs and patterns consisting of small triangles and diamonds. The result is a very finely embroidered fabric, almost looking like it was made by a machine!
